Silvers ancient history.
Old World Silver (4000 BC - 1500 AD)
The area of Anatolia (modern Turkey) is considered the first
major source of mined silver, having provided the resource to
craftsman throughout Asia Minor. Silver from the Anatolian
region largely served as the source of silver for the Western
cultures flourishing in the Near East, Crete, and Greece.
Silver craftsmanship was centered largely in Asia Minor and
Greek Islands, along with areas of mainland Greece dominated by
the Mycenaean culture. Asia Minor provided most of the supply
for the flourishing silver market.
A concentrated effort to mine silver began sometime after 3000
B.C. The first sophisticated processing of silver ore was
attributed to the Chaldeans in about 2500 B.C., who used a
"cupellation" process to extract silver from lead-silver ores.
The need for traditional silver (particularly for the
flourishing Minoan and later Mycenaean civilizations) resulted
in the location and exploitation of silver deposits in what is
now Armenia

continually rediscovers the lure of the

The Color of Diamonds
Gem-quality diamonds vary in shade from colorless to yellow. To
judge the color, diamonds are compared to an internationally
accepted master set of stones that range from D, or colorless
(the most sought-after), to Z, the yellowiest. Diamonds may also
be brown, orange, pink, blue, and other colors. The most intense
of these shades are called "fancy" colors and are listed in the
IGI Diamond Report. The farther from colorless a diamond, the
less rare and less valuable it is. It is often difficult to
detect the difference between a colorless diamond (D-F) and a
near-colorless diamond (G-H), especially when the diamond is
mounted in jewelry. This is important to remember when buying a
diamond. Diamonds with a J-Z color grade have a yellow shading
that may be detected by the naked eye; however, a well-cut stone
with good proportions will still release the brilliance and fire
of a lower-colored, or more transparent, diamond and disperse
light in such a way as to reflect a beautiful stone. Learn more

Diamond Grading Labs
A certificate of a
diamond does not contain an appraisal of the diamond; it
only describes the quality of the diamond without placing a
monetary value on it. There are many diamond labs in existence
that issue certificates. The two most widely regarded diamond
grading labs in the world are the Gemological Institute of
America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS).
Buying a Diamond Engagement Ring
It is usually very difficult to see the difference between a
colorless diamond (D-F) and a near-colorless diamond (G-H),
especially when the diamond is mounted in jewelry. This is
important to remember when shopping for
diamond
engagement rings. Diamonds with a J-Z color grade have
yellowish shading that may be detected by the naked eye, but a
well-cut stone with good proportions will still be beautiful,
releasing the brilliance and fire of a lower-colored diamond. It
will disperse light to reveal a beautiful stone.
Pricing Gold
A piece of gold
jewelry is priced according to a number of factors,
including the number of karats, the weight in grams, the design,
and the craftsmanship. The number of karats and gram weight
reveal how much gold is in a piece, but these two factors alone
don't determine price. The amount of work that goes into a piece
is also a major factor, along with the jewelry's construction
and design. The techniques used in construction can make a piece
more flexible and comfortable as well as durable and give many
years of enjoyment. A unique design with intricate details,
gemstones, and special settings or a clasp will also raise the
price. Properly cared for, such a piece will last a lifetime.
What Sterling Silver Is Made Of
Did you know silver in its natural form is harder than gold.
even though silver is still still considered too soft for use in
fine jewelry. What jewelers do to make it harder and more usable
for jewelry is to mix it with other metals. This mixing process
gives it strength. Sterling silver is composed of 92.5 percent
silver and 7.5 percent copper. This mixture makes the metal
harder and more durable. Mexico, the United States, Peru,
Australia, and Canada is where most of the world's silver comes
from. Common pieces of jewelry made from sterling silver are
necklace,
Italian charm bracelets and rings.
An Abundant Element Used For Jewelry
Titanium, a lustrous gray metallic element, is used most often
to make lightweight, corrosion-resistant alloys. It has many
desirable properties, most notably its durability and incredible
strength. Titanium is abundant on earth and has been detected in
meteorites and in the sun and other stars. Titanium oxide
(TiO2)bands are especially visible in the spectra of M-type
stars. Titanium, a transitional element of the periodic table,
is also found on the moon. Rocks obtained during the Apollo 17
mission showed the presence of titanium oxide. To learn more

for thousands of years. Pearls have always come into and out of
fashion. Now they have become very fashionable again, and people
are wearing them for many different occasions. People all over
the world are wearing all types of pearl jewelry. People are
buying and wearing pearl jewelry, and giving these beautiful
creations as gifts.
The Mothers Ring
The mother is the most important woman in a persons life. You
can celebrate your love for your mother with a
mother's ring.
Your mother loves you and will love you always, regardless of
what you do. Since you were born, she has cared for you and
loved you unconditionally. You know it wasn't always easy; it is
a wonder she was able to do all the things she did. You probably
didn't make it any easier for her either, if you are like most
of us! Now is your chance to show her that you recognize all she
did to give you the best she could. A mother's ring is more than
just a piece of jewelry. It represents the love you have for
your mother.
How To Clean Your Emeralds
Clean your emeralds with a soft damp cloth and warm water and a
soft brush. Softly clean your gems with soft circular motions.
Do not use mechanical cleaners and above all else avoid
chemicals and heat. Using chemicals may dissolve the oils used
during cutting and processing to conceal inclusions. To be on
the safe side take your
gem jewelry
and emeralds to a professional jeweler. Have a jeweler re-oil
your emerald every few years.
Why give gifts to the Groomsmen
Being part of a long tradition it is customary for the groom to
give gifts to the best man, groomsmen and ushers. The groom
gives gifts not just because of the tradition, but because they
showed up for the wedding and they are suppose to be your good
friends. A
groomsmen gift can be just about anything. Some of the more
popular gifts are baseball bats and liquor.
Fancy Color Diamonds
While colorless
diamonds are the most expensive, fancy color diamonds are
still popular, perhaps more so than ever. Gemologists have
developed methods, such as irradiation followed by a high heat
treatment, to turn brownish and yellowish diamonds into
colorful, attractive diamonds. Since natural colored diamonds
are rare and expensive, treatment makes it possible for more
people to own fancy color diamonds. Diamond enhancements such as
irradiation should always be disclosed to the consumer. A buyer
should assume that any fancy color diamond that is affordable
has been treated in some way. If you have any question about a
stone's origins, you should ask for a lab certificate to verify
its authenticity.
Pamper Your Bridesmaid
Everyone enjoys a little pampering now and then, including
bridesmaids.
Bridesmaid gifts made to pamper never go out of style. You
can buy baskets and fill them with any number of pampering
luxuries such as soaps, lotions, bubble bath, perfumes, nail
polish, a manicure set, massage oils, bath oils, a makeup kit,
and bath salts. Or you could give them a gift certificate to a
spa. Pampering gifts are one of the most fabulous and popular
gift ideas. You would want to buy pampering items separately for
each bridesmaid so she could pamper herself at home whenever the
mood strikes her.
The Gold Ring
The origin of the Episcopal ring can be traced back to the
golden ring worn
by ancient pagan priests, or flamens consecrated to the worship
of Jupiter. The senators as well had the privilege of wearing a
gold ring. It would not be surprising to discover that Christian
bishops wore gold rings in the fourth century, but the evidence
for this is not clear. However, it is undeniable that Pope
Boniface IV issued a decree in 610 requiring monks elevated to
the Episcopal dignity to wear the ring.
